Fall Arrester

The Fall Arrester is a mechanical safety device designed to travel freely along a fixed anchor line or rope during normal worker movement, but automatically lock in place the instant it detects the rapid, sudden motion characteristic of a fall, effectively stopping the worker’s descent within a short distance. This automatic locking mechanism is typically triggered by inertia or a rapid pull sensor, allowing the device to distinguish between normal, gradual movement along the line and the sudden acceleration associated with an actual fall event.

Constructed from durable metal components, often aluminum alloy or steel, the fall arrester is designed to attach to a full body harness via its integrated connection point, forming a critical link in a personal fall arrest system alongside the harness and anchor line. Many models feature a shock-absorbing element to help cushion the sudden deceleration forces on the worker’s body when the device locks and arrests the fall, reducing the risk of injury from the abrupt stop.

Fall Arresters are commonly used by workers performing tasks on vertical ladders, towers, scaffolding, and rope access work, where continuous vertical or horizontal movement along a fixed line is required while maintaining constant fall protection. Regular inspection and testing of the locking mechanism are essential to ensure reliable performance during an actual fall event.
