The Face Shield is a transparent protective barrier, usually made from polycarbonate or acetate, that is mounted onto a headgear frame or clipped directly onto a safety helmet to guard the wearer’s entire face against flying particles, chemical splashes, sparks, and debris. Unlike goggles, which only cover the eyes, a face shield extends coverage to the forehead, cheeks, chin, and neck area, offering a more comprehensive layer of protection during tasks such as grinding, cutting, chemical handling, or working near rotating machinery. The shield material is selected for its high impact resistance and optical clarity, allowing workers to maintain clear vision while performing precision tasks.

Many face shields are designed with a ratchet or pivot mechanism that lets the wearer flip the shield up when not actively needed and lower it back down quickly when returning to hazardous work, similar in concept to a welding shield but intended for lighter-duty applications such as general grinding, woodworking, or laboratory work. Face shields are often used in combination with safety goggles or glasses underneath, since the shield alone does not always provide a fully sealed barrier against fine dust or aerosols. This layered protection approach is common in workshops, laboratories, and industrial maintenance environments where both impact and splash hazards are present.
