Windsock

The Windsock is a conical fabric device mounted on a pole that visually indicates wind direction and provides a rough estimate of wind speed by observing how much the sock inflates and the angle at which it extends from its mounting point. Made from lightweight, durable fabric such as nylon or polyester, the windsock is designed to respond quickly to changes in wind conditions, offering an immediate visual reference for personnel working in outdoor industrial environments where wind direction and intensity can significantly affect safety, particularly during crane operations, helicopter landings, or the handling of lightweight materials.

Typically finished in bright orange or a combination of high-visibility colors with alternating stripes, the windsock is easy to spot from a distance, allowing workers and equipment operators across a facility to quickly gauge wind conditions without needing specialized instruments.

The mounting pole is usually installed at an elevated position, free from obstructions, to ensure the windsock accurately reflects the true wind conditions rather than localized turbulence caused by nearby structures. Windsocks are commonly installed at helipads, ports, chemical plants, and construction sites involving crane operations, where sudden changes in wind direction or speed could pose safety risks to lifting operations, material handling, or emergency response activities such as controlling the spread of airborne hazardous substances.
